Last month saw the visit of a group to NIBRT from Canty Engineering to plan the next phase of a collaborative research programme. The work involves the implementation of high-resolution optical systems to the monitoring and control of bioprocesses. Novel instrumentation will be utilised such as the PharmaFlowTM system for continuous monitoring of multiple cellular parameters as well as the BioCamTM for the control of foam during a mammalian cell bioprocess. The work is being supported by a second round of funding from Enterprise Ireland that includes two post-doctoral researchers over 2 years.  A presentation of some of the past collaborative work entitled “Optical and Dielectric Technologies for Continuous Monitoring of Bioprocesses” was given By Mike Butler at a recent Bioprocessing Summit Europe conference organised by Cambridge Healthtech Institute in Barcelona.
